EDWARD RACOUBIAN is one of the survivors of the Armenian genocide. He was born in 1906. He looks like a depressed person who was harassed throughout his life time.
I believe he is feeling anger and depression. This is because he was forced to leave his home so that he doesn't get killed. Also because he has been beaten by nomads and he was treated badly.
After the story he told I think he tried to escape from the nomads and succeeded. He probably then found a new family that took care of him.
